There are few professions as misunderstood as professional spying. To the average person on the street, it’s all sleeping with bikini-clad women and fending off neurotic mad men from taking over the world. In truth, it hasn’t been like that since 1971. Thankfully for Mark Anderson, he was spying during its heyday. Like most of his fellows, he was recruited while still in school, Medfield College, in his case. After two years running interference as a bureau asset in Czechoslovakia, Mark was made a junior agent. In 1967 he assisted British agent Harold Crump in tracking down the elusive Doctor Emil Keller, who had been kidnapped by hostile communist agents. The following year while most of the rest of the world was fighting The Great Zombie War, Mark slipped past the Iron Curtain to stop Boris Kolenkhov from assassinating Soviet Premier Grubozaboyschikov and plunging the world into further strife. In 1973 Mark discovered he had fathered a son by Vicky Bien. Mark tried to do the right thing and marry Vicky, but she was killed immediately after their wedding by Jimmy Neville. Mark took a desk job in Aparo City and raised his son alone.

Gwendolyn Anderson came to public attention as the first woman to be admitted to St. Cedd’s College, Cambridge in 1898. Her application was eased through by a recommendation by the Regis Professor of Chronology, an old family friend. She spent three unhappy years there before being expelled with several other students for their involvement in the Millington Affair. From there she spent a year traveling the continent, visiting Pottsylvania in particular for an extended period of time. Returning to London, she sent word through society that she was available to care of unusual problems discreetly.

Her first known client was Lady Diana Phipps, for whom she deciphered a piece of automatic writing made by one of Lady Diana’s servants. With Lady Diana’s recommendation, she took many cliental from the lower rungs of the aristocracy. In 1908, after an encounter with the Grand Duke Gusion, Gwendolyn gave up her practice and went to live in the county of Mortshire with her longtime companion Victoria Maxtible. Following the Great War she undertook one last mission at the behest of Sir David Pontefract to recover a painting from the clutches of Baron Shardovan of Timania.

The life of Katherine Abigail Anderson is less shrouded than she would care to admit. Born in 1975 she led a fairly sedate childhood. Her father Mark Anderson, a former occult investigator, did his best to shield Kate from that life. He failed. At the age of 11, Kate was abducted by a group of well meaning but confused Bokonists who attempted to indoctrinate her and sever other neighborhood children in their belief system. However, as Bokonism does not have a strict set of beliefs or dogma, this attempt was flawed at best. When she was 17, Kate left home under mysterious circumstances. She returned two years later, scarcely looking a day older, to discover that her mother had passed away.

How Kate came to Barnett College is a matter of some conjecture as the position was never formally advertised. It is clear, however, that she simply uses the college to fund her myriad adventures. She holds no great love for teaching. Indeed, it wasn’t even three days into her first semester that she abandoned her classes to join the race against Opal Forrester to find the Book of Krag N’thoth. She should be noted, though, that her classes are some of the most popular at Barnett and she is generally adored by her students. Recently, Kate came into contact with a mysterious organization known as the Forseti Group, who offered her a job. They did not offer any details, so she turned them down. As a gesture of good will, they gave her a map to the real tomb of the Emperor Sujin. The veracity of this map has yet to be proven.

Mark Anderson
  • Height: 6'0"
  • Weight: 194 lbs
  • Hair: Red
  • Eyes: Blue
  • Known Relatives: Zoë Anderson (wife), Kate Anderson (daughter),
  • Birthplace: Fox City, IA
  • Occupation: Private Investigator, formerly a sergeant in the US Army.
  • First Appearance:  Eight Arms to Hold You
Following the Great Zombie War of 1968, American soldiers found it difficult to reintegrate back into mainstream society. Some turned their backs on the world, others became shattered husks scarcely mire human than those they fought, and then there were those like Mark Anderson who began to look into the fringes of the world to prevent this sort of thing form happening again. With Charles West he opened Vì Investigations, based out of Los Angeles. For the next two years they investigated strange phenomena up and down the West Coast. In 1970, they became caught up in a series of ritual murders committed by a Thuggee death cult. It was during this case that he met Zoë Harris, his future wife. After the Broadway Incident of 1974, he retired from the active life to settle down with Zoë.
Clyfrd
  • Height: 6'0"
  • Weight: 175 lbs
  • Hair: Red
  • Eyes: Green
  • Known Relatives:  Ander the Strong (father), Waykman the Caped (grandfather), Ethelfeth (grandmother), Brufard the Rhythmic (great-grandfather),  Kate Anderson (distant descendant)
  • Birthplace: Unknown, possibly Stamfordshire, England
  • Occupation: Warrior
  • First Appearance: The Saga of Clyfrd, Ander's Son
After the Beast of Camon Ber slaughtered his family Clyfrd, son of Ander traveled to the Grimpen Mire to slay it.  The Beast killed his friend and swallowed Clyfrd whole.  Inside the Beast's stomach Clyfrd used his sharpened gauntlet to hack his way out, killing the beast in the process.  He then traveled to the court of King Brian the Wild, where he was rewarded for his actions.

Reliable accounts from the early 10th century are, of course, hard to come by, but there are reports of Clyfrd wandering Europe as a Monster Killer for hire.  It is said he dispatched such creatures as Ireland's dobhar-chu, a nasnas in what is now modern day Turkey, a nest of Upland Trout in France, and the dreaded hui.  Written fragments of the Ballad of Clyfrd, Ander's Son have been found in Shrewsbury Abbey, probably recorded at the behest of the Abbot Ranulf nearly two hundred years after the song was first sung.

Doctor Timothy Eccles
  • Height: 5'9"
  • Weight: 150 lbs
  • Hair: Brown
  • Eyes: Brown
  • Known Relatives:  Alan Eccles (father), Teri Eccles (mother)
  • Birthplace: Market Shipborough, Norfolk, England
  • Occupation: Lecturer in Mythology, Barnett College
  • First Appearance: Kate Anderson and the Book of the Dead
When Timothy Eccles innocently sidled up to Kate Anderson at the Barnett College Fall Faculty Fling, he had no idea he was embarking on the most important friendship he would ever have. He was almost immediately press-ganged into accompanying Kate during her search for the Book of Krag N’thoth, one of the many tomes of the Necronomicon. Although initially stand-offish, the pair warmed to each other quite quickly. From there, Timothy was a bizarre sort of Boswell to Kate, following her on many adventures as his schedule permitted. In 2000, he realized that he had romantic feelings for Kate, but kept them under wraps for fear of ruining their friendship. After helping to recover the Reliquary of St. Hubbins, he was shocked and pleased to discover Kate felt the same way. The two entered into a romantic relationship, with Timothy moving into Kate’s house soon after.

Timothy obtained his doctorate in mythology at the age of 24 at St. Matthew’s College, Cambridge. He is a master of half a dozen languages, all of which are dead. He considers himself to be a lover, not a fighter (although he’s not much of a lover either). Despite, or perhaps because of all he’s seen, Timothy is a staunch atheist.

Mothman
  • Alter Ego: Drake Anderson
  • Height: 6'1"
  • Weight: 185 lbs
  • Hair: Brown
  • Eyes: Green
  • Known Relatives: Kate Anderson (cousin)
  • Birthplace: Aparo City, CT
  • Occupation: Millionaire Playboy, Crimefighter
  • First Appearance: The Magnificent Adventures of Mothman and Chrysalis
The origins of the mysterious Mothman are shrouded in lies and half-truths.  He has claimed several different and contradictory accounts of his origin over the years.
  1. His parents were killed by a moth when he was eight.  Later in life, he took the thing that frightened him as a child and turned it into a symbol of hope for the masses.
  2. Inspired by a moth flying into a bug zapper late one night, he vowed to become the beacon of light that criminals are drawn to.
  3. He was given a high tech suit of armor by group of civic minded, yet publicity shy lepidopterists.  Unfortunately none of them were competent engineers so the suit never worked properly, though he still felt compelled to carry out their work.

The simplest and most likely explanation was that Drake Anderson was bored.  Whatever the actual reason, Drake has proven himself remarkably adept crimefighter.  Most forms of crime were dramatically reduced within weeks of his appearance, but in some area of Aparo City grand larceny shot upwards of three hundred percent, with more costumed villains trying to get away with things under Mothman's watch.  These attempts have largely been thwarted, however.  In one notable instance Mothman captured the Flautist, Cold Brewski, Mr. Baddie and the Mauve Marauder within 72 hours.
